G. Kirk Raab and Ken Buetow to Give Keynote Speeches
at Velos eResearch Annual Meeting
Fremont, CA — April 19, 2006 — Velos, Inc., an innovator in
clinical research information systems, is pleased to announce that
G. Kirk Raab, the former Chief Executive Officer of Genentech, and
Ken Buetow, Program Director for NCI’s Center for Bioinformatics,
are scheduled to deliver the Keynote speeches at the company’s
eResearch Annual Meeting in San Francisco on May 11 and 12.
“We’re so pleased to have these two distinguished speakers share
their perspectives on the interaction among pharmaceutical
companies, government research programs, and academic medical
centers in clinical research,” says John McIlwain, President of
Velos.
After earning a bachelors degree with honors from Colgate
University, G. Kirk Raab joined Pfizer in 1959 and rose quickly up
the sales and marketing ranks. From 1965 to 1968, he was General
Manager for Mexico for A.H. Robins. From 1968 through 1975 he served
as Vice President, Latin America for Beecham Group, Ltd. Mr. Raab
joined Abbot Laboratories in 1975 and a year later was promoted to
Executive Vice President, International Operations. In 1981, Mr.
Raab was named President, Chief Operating Officer, and Director. Mr.
Raab also oversaw Abbott’s equity investment in Amgen and served on
the Amgen Board of Directors from 1981-1985.
Mr. Raab joined Genentech in February 1985 as Chief Operating
Officer and a Director. In 1990, he become CEO of Genentech, and
served as CEO until 1995. Mr. Raab currently serves as Chairman or
Director for a range of biotechnology-related companies, including
Velos.
Dr. Buetow received a B.A. in biology from Indiana University in
1980 and a Ph.D. in human genetics from the University of Pittsburgh
in 1985.From 1986 to 1998, Dr. Buetow was at the Fox Chase Cancer
Center in Philadelphia, where his group generated and electronically
distributed the human genetic map.
Dr. Buetow recently was appointed to the new position of NCI
Associate Director for Bioinformatics and Information Technologies.
Previously, Dr. Buetow served as director of the NCI Center for
Bioinformatics. Dr. Buetow serves a dual role for the National
Cancer Institute. He is chief of the Laboratory of Population
Genetics (LPG). His research interests include the application of
genetics and genomics tools to understanding the genetic basis of
complex traits.
