Harvard and M_I_T Announce Implementation of Velos Research Solution
Boston, MA and San Francisco, CA - April 22, 1999 -
Velos Medical Informatics, Inc.and the Division of Health
Sciences and Technology at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts
Institute of Technology announced today application of the Velos
Research software suite in an innovative course on applying
state-of-the-art information technology to healthcare problems. The
course, developed by Harvard’s Dr. Steven Locke, brings a practical
focus to how state-of-the-art information technology can be used to
solve today’s healthcare challenges.
“While a variety of
information technologies have thrived within research laboratories
for years, they have had little bottom line impact on the day-to-day
practice of medicine, until recently,” notes Dr. Locke. “The goal of
this course is to bring this practical focus to bear on applying
information technology to a variety of health care challenges. Velos
Research is one of several important software technologies we’re
using to demonstrate and achieve this.”
Students in the
course are applying acquired skills and technologies
to:
Design and develop an electronic triage tagger via remote
data transmission.
Design and clinically assess a
computer-generated questionnaire to establish tailored nutrition
prescriptions.
Design a graphical interface system for
displaying patient information in a single, multi-dimensional
graphic.
Assess the clinical outcomes and profitability of a
new infusion pump technology system.
Design and test a
computer-assisted disease management program to improve outcomes in
diabetic patients.
Design and implement web-based
pre-operative interventions for Anesthesia and
Surgery.
Design and develop an interactive patient and
physician education program for gastrointestinal disorders via the
WWW.
“Velos medical and software professionals have spent the
last seven years working with leading clinicians, pharmaceutical
companies, and healthcare organizations to develop easy-to-use
software that addresses practical clinical, research, and economic
healthcare needs in one seamless approach,” said John McIlwain,
President of Velos Medical Informatics. ”We’re very pleased to see
Velos software applied in Dr. Locke’s innovative
course.”
Velos designs, develops and markets disease
management software for the renal disease/dialysis, transplantation,
oncology, cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery markets. Velos
software encompasses patient care, clinical outcomes, scheduling,
clinical research, case management, financial management and
decision support. Velos products are under contract in more than
1,000 clinics and hospitals, including large proportions of the
cardiothoracic and cardiology markets, the dialysis market, and a
rapidly growing number of transplantation and oncology programs.
Velos has quickly become a leader in specialty and disease
management medical informatics.
