  • Researchers at over 50 Major Healthcare Organizations Sign-up for Velos eResearch following Launch

San Francisco, CA - December 5, 2001 - Velos, an innovative healthcare software and internet services vendor, today announced signing researchers at over 50 major healthcare organizations following the launch of Velos eResearch just two months ago. Velos eResearch is a transformational, investigator-centered, internet-based clinical trials management service that supports the administration, study execution, and communications challenges of the underserved clinical investigator community.

“The healthcare industry is plagued by long software acquisition cycles,” notes John McIlwain, President and CEO of Velos. “Approvals for capital investments and grants take months or sometimes years. Software vendors build high sales and support costs into their pricing. Many end-users simply do without. Velos is first-to-market with an entirely new model for providing critical healthcare information services. Clearly, the great response we’ve experienced indicates significant demand for such an offering.”

“Velos already counts among its planned subscribers investigators at four of the top ten medical centers as ranked by U.S. News and World Report,” continued Mr. McIlwain. “What’s particularly unique about Velos eResearch is that the service involves minimal implementation effort and major components are free for individual investigators and small investigator teams.”

The volume of clinical research has increased dramatically over the last ten years and is expected to continue to grow substantially over the next ten years. The vast majority of clinical research today is done with pen and paper. This has begun to change among industry sponsors, who are increasingly investing in Remote Data Capture systems and other technologies that are expected to shorten the elapsed time to trial database lock. Numerous vendors, large and small, have emerged to serve study sponsors. However, the investigator activities that lead up to trial data submission, such as protocol design, budgeting, IRB approvals, patient recruitment, patient scheduling, and task management, account for the bulk of the controllable elapsed time in clinical trials. Solving these problems requires getting useful information technology into the hands of investigators, quickly and inexpensively.

Velos eResearch ushers in a new generation of internet-based research capabilities that fundamentally improve the pervasiveness and efficiency of clinical research, both internally and with trial sponsors. Velos eResearch enables better investigator recruitment and patient enrollment, better communication and transfer of protocol and data between investigators, the IRB and the participating sites, and better task/time management, thereby reducing the elapsed time and effort required to execute clinical trials. And best of all, it’s FREE for individual and small investigator teams.

“Velos is in the fortunate position of having been able to invest significant time and money working side-by-side with investigators and their support staffs,” commented Priti Sahai, MD, Velos eResearch Product Manager. “We then built, from scratch, a pure, HIPAA compliant internet solution that requires minimum set-up and maintenance, is productive in minutes and hours, not weeks and months, and requires only a web browser for access.”
